My Life My Terms

“You only live once, but if you do it right, once is enough….”  – Mae West

I am totally inspired by the above quote by MAE WEST and I would like to follow it to the hilt. I am in a wonderful phase of life where I have reached a stage where I feel unhinged, unrestricted and to a large extent not bound by chains of rules, regulations and what others might think. This is what I love about my age. I have wasted so much of my life in pleasing others and I still do, it’s not that it can just come to a sudden halt but it has reduced and there is a feeling of elation as well as empowerment when you start doing things for yourself. Sometimes I chide myself for starting so late but better late than sorry and I am unapologetic about it. One can find so much of joy in doing such trivial things like just picking up the car and going for a drive all by yourself, baking your favorite dish, saying NO without giving any reason, not always seeking someone’s approval so on and so forth .The list is endless and I can just go on and on…

You gather so much of experience by the time you reach 50 that you can easily become a counselor, namely child, career, marriage that you don’t require a degree to show off your skills to an enchanted audience. Your age is your degree and you don’t have to prove it especially if you have a healthy and happy marriage, well-groomed kids and a successful career. These are proof enough for you to be an effective counselor.

It doesn’t mean that everything is rosy for the half centurions. It has its pitfalls too especially when the younger generation feels that our views are too archaic or our skills are outdated and no one has the time to take free advice but then it is up to us to make ourselves relevant in their lives, a major overhauling is required if you really have the aforementioned qualities. It’s time to think solemnly and transform with times. I know it sounds cliched but that’s the real picture and we can’t turn our backs and be indifferent. Live and let Live is the mantra so follow it diligently….

I have made a number of friends over the years and good friends are your backbone, there are only a handful who are your lifeline and others are mere passersby but at least they are there, never stop forging new alliances and you never know what good can come out of it. Life is too short to live without buddies, they are your health card so never lose them if you want to stay hale and hearty…..
